AISD is a recognized leader in urban education and is dedicated to providing an arts-rich education for every student. In 2015-16, Fine Arts education was available at all 129 schools serving all of the district's 86,000 students. 

Every elementary student in the district receives a high quality education in

Elementary Art • Elementary Music

and secondary schools throughout AISD offer many different fine arts strands for students to pursue:

Band • Choir • Dance • Guitar • Orchestra • Theatre • Visual Arts

Each of these sequential courses, all of which feature a meaningful and rigorous curriculum taught by expert staff, provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary for cognitive, creative, emotional and social growth. By enrolling in these fine arts courses, students are also eligible to participate in clinics and contests such as All-City Guitar, All-City Band, All-City Choir, UIL Concert and Sight Reading, One Act Play, Dance Spectacular and Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE) as well as various concerts, events, and art exhibits throughout the community. Fine Arts students from AISD have won numerous district, state, and national awards and scholarships, and many have gone on to pursue the arts in higher education and beyond.

Our Purpose

The purpose of the AISD Fine Arts Department is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for cognitive, creative, emotional and social growth. The AISD Fine Arts Department actively seeks to:

  • Build many types of literacy while developing intuition, reasoning, imagination, and dexterity into unique forms of expression and communication.
  • Explore the influence of the arts and their power to create and reflect cultures.
  • Engage students in a process that enables them to develop the self-esteem, self-discipline, self-motivation, and cooperation necessary for success in life.

Our Beliefs

We in the AISD Fine Arts Department share the following beliefs regarding Fine Arts curriculum and instruction:

  • Instruction in the Fine Arts is essential for the development of the whole child.
  • Fine Arts education is for all students.
  • Well-educated students have basic knowledge, skills, and appreciation of the Fine Arts.
  • The Fine Arts provide unique experiences that combine the physical, mental, social, and emotional aspects of human existence.
  • The Fine Arts are a means of communication beyond the written and spoken word with the self, others, and the world around us.
  • The Fine Arts are a historical component of civilization and a body of knowledge which provide a sense of cultural integrity and a sense of belonging.
  • Participation in the Fine Arts maximizes critical thinking skills and creativity.
  • Fine Arts education prepares students to be successful, contributing members of society.
