Two Austin ISD Elementary Music teachers, Ms. Meredith Riggs and Ms. Loren Tarnow, have been published in the Texas Music Educators Association’s Southwestern Musician magazine. Southwestern Musician is distributed to over 10,000 music educators across the state.
Riggs, who teaches at Hart Elementary, and Tarnow, who teaches at Graham Elementary, wrote the article Our Kids Can for TMEA’s Southwestern Musician magazine for their September 2016 issue.
The article, which is also published on the TMEA website, explains some of the unique challenges that Riggs and Tarnow have experienced while teaching at low-socioeconomic schools. It then details the strategies and resources that they’ve found to embrace differences, create vibrant relationships with students, and ensure that ALL students succeed in their classrooms and beyond.
These strategies, including creating a safe space for all students, planning a creative and culturally inclusive music repertoire to keep students engaged, and providing sequence and consistency to help students transition from core classrooms to music lessons, are used to help students of all backgrounds feel accomplished, confident, and poised for success in their music classrooms.
Congratulations to Ms. Meredith Riggs and Ms. Loren Tarnow on both their dedication to reinventing the urban school experience, and for shining a spotlight on the wonderful elementary music programs in Austin ISD, proving that with creativity and innovation, our kids can.
